All around the world, humanity has been intrigued by death and what follows after it. Different cultures have special ways of worshiping their ancestors and some of these ancient-rooted traditions have been adopting and integrating new elements over the years. In the case of the “Día de Muertos" (the Mexican celebration of the “Day of the Dead”), this is certainly true. While many say that it is a tradition going back to pre-Hispanic times, others say it began with the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. This conversation will look at the truth behind this celebrated occasion, as well as understanding what elements make up the typical Day of the Dead.

Candles, flowers, literary “calaveritas”, decorations of paper, food, and music, are just some of the Mexican elements for celebrating life and death. This seminar invites eager participants to delve into the origin of this celebration by learning more about the traditional components of this Mexican celebration; come and marvel at the different ways in which the "Day of the Dead" is honored in Mexico. Led by Mexico city-based-archaeologist and Mesoamerican studies expert, Jazmin Caraveo-Tunon, this conversation will deepen participants understanding of this critical Mexican tradition and its ongoing role in Mexican society and culture.

Participants are welcome to join with marigolds, calaveras (decorative skulls), or even with faces painted in the fashion of La Catrina (one of the most recognizable symbols of the holiday).

Born and raised in Mexico City, Jazmín's interest and passion for pre-Colonial art and worldview of ancient Mexican cultures led her to pursue a degree in archaeology (ENAH) and a Master's degree in Mesoamerican studies (UNAM). Her fascination for the Maya culture and her love for Mexico led her to become an adventurous tour guide with the purpose of sharing the historic, cultural, and natural heritage of this beautiful country.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Just amazing!

This was really a great deal of fun. Over the years I’ve heard so much about the Day of the Dead celebrations, and it was wonderful to hear the background, the traditions, and their meanings. Ms. Caravel-Timon has an obvious passion and affinity for her country and its traditions, and that made this conversation that much more interesting. I particularly enjoyed hearing about the altars. Having grown up in Southern California, I had seen many versions of these alters but had no idea why they contained what they did or the meaning of the various elements.

Muy Bueno!

I thoroughly enjoyed Jazmin’s presentation - having been fortunate to experience the Dias de los Muertos in Oaxaca years ago, I enjoyed the further depth of origins and traditions that she shared with us. She is a charming and knowledgeable guide- and her skull make-up was a wonderful enhancement.
