From medieval bards singing around campfires to modern blockbuster films, King Arthur and his knights have captivated audiences for centuries. But was he real? In this seminar, medieval historian Dr. Thomas F. Madden will guide participants through the thicket of surviving evidence seeking the historical Arthur and explore the rich literary tradition that formed him into a king of legend. Along the way, participants will discover the medieval chronicles, poems, and romances that brought the mythical figure to life.

Led by an expert on medieval history, Dr. Thomas Madden, this interactive seminar will explore the legend of King Arthur. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of this literary hero.

Thomas F Madden is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University. As an author and historical consultant, he has appeared in such venues as The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, and The History Channel. He is a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Medieval Academy of America, and he is a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar.

Academically very sound, no passion

This was not what I expected. It was good and Dr. Madden was knowledgable and charming. The presentation was well researched and documented but I missed the passion other Context presenters have for their subject. I expected a bit more magic and a reference or two to cities or places to visit.
