The attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, was a devastating surprise for the United States, causing horrific consequences. This conversation will explore that fateful day in the greater context of Japanese military history, right back to the Tokugawa Shogunate in seventeenth-century Japan. We’ll trace Japan's fateful gamble with its invasion of China, the Pacific, and the Battle of the Coral Sea as we deepen our understanding of this particular moment in world history.

The Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor was a decisive risk with horrific consequences for Japan, Great Britain, the United States, and other nations in the Pacific. In order to fully understand the reasons for this surprise show of force, we need to go further back in Japanese history. We’ll discuss how the roots of Japanese militarism ran deep, from the Tokugawa Shogunate in the seventeenth-century to Japan's rapid modernization and iconic Battle of Tsushima with Russia in 1905. Beginning with the invasions of China and Manchuria in the 1930s and ending with its final invasion of the Pacific, Japan started a march across the Pacific that ended in catastrophe.
