Explore the first quarter of the eighteenth century Russia and its greatest events through the life of the most important ruler of the country. This conversation will trace the history of the life of Peter the Great as we discuss his extensive reforms, his reorganization of the army, his creation of a fleet, victories in battle, and of course, his rather unique personality.

Born in the merchant city of Moscow, Peter the Great founded what would become the new noble capital of European Russia and an emblem of Western design: Saint Petersburg. Growing up in a conservative Tsardom of Russia he put the country on European rails and by the end of his reign proclaimed the country as Empire. We’ll discuss how he led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the traditionalist and medieval social and political mores with a modern, scientific, Europe-oriented, and rationalist system. We will start with the early years of Peter the Great in Moscow, we’ll then discuss the Grand Embassy of Peter the Great and his incognito travels to the West where he even worked as a shipbuilder. The main part of the conversation will focus on the reforms of Peter the Great that changed the way of life of the whole country. We will learn why he got the title “The Great” and just how he became the most respected emperor in Russian history.

Led by historian Vadim Malinovsky this seminar will give a deep dive into the changes in the lifestyle of the Russian Royal family as well as the history of the country of the first quarter of the eighteenth century. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the great heritage and legacy left behind after the rule of this critical figure in Russian history, Peter the Great.

Vadim is a historian (MA) who has graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. His focus is contemporary Russian history. He is working on a PhD dissertation on Stalin’s national policy.
