Victoria: Queen, Empress, passionate wife, devoted mother, and matriarch of Europe. 120 years after her death on January 22, 1901, her story remains as fascinating as ever.

Only six queens in a thousand years of British history have sat on the throne independently. Rarer still, one of those queens, Victoria, held the record as the longest-reigning monarch in British history, reigning from June 20, 1837, until January 22, 1901. The record has now been surpassed by another of those queens, Victoria’s great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth II.

Victoria’s reign began full of excitement: she survived eight assignation attempts, had a passionate and loving marriage, and raised nine children who went on to create dynasties across Europe. She was the first Monarch in Britain to use Buckingham Palace, but it was not big enough for her needs and growing family. In this seminar, we’ll see how she renovated the Palace to its current form. She is the only monarch in British history to have published diaries. Despite being heavily edited by her daughter, these and surviving letters give a wonderful, entertaining insight into the thinking and passions of this remarkable woman, some even make you blush!

Later in her life, the loss of her devoted husband, Albert, led to 20 years of gloomy seclusion driven by her profound grief. As a widow, she had, what were to some, scandalous relationships with two of her closest servants. Contrary to the general opinion she was frequently amused, loved dancing and fancy dress parties. Together we will uncover all of the facets of this dynamic Queen.

Led by a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Blue Badge Guide, and scholar of the British monarchy, Sean Moran, this interactive seminar will explore the reign of Queen Victoria. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of her storied tenure on the throne and the scandals she is purported to have been party to during her reign.

Since leaving university in 1982, Sean has lived and worked across the globe in a nearly 30-year career as a senior executive in financial services. He put his skills and knowledge to work in the Charity Sector in the UK for 7 years but decided life was too short to not focus entirely on his passions for people, history, art and architecture. When not guiding, Sean is restoring a Georgian House and serving as a Parish Councillor. He is a freeman of the City of London and a freeman of the City Livery company of Clockmakers. He lives in London and Wiltshire.
