Luca Zaggia, an extremely knowledgeable geologist and oceanographer, provides a comprehensive overview of the problems that Venice has faced and continues to face in the present. He supports his presentation with fascinating maps and graphics on the history, geography, ecology and trade of this unique city. He demonstrates that Venice's challenges with and strategies to combat flooding are not just specific to this city, but have applications around the world.
This was an amazingly detailed "need to know" lecture in a short time, related in a very interesting manner and accompanied by helpful graphics. I learned much about how Venice grew, what threats the population faced over the centuries (e.g., the plagues), how changing sea levels are impacting the city, and what the challenges current residents face in light of little tourism. I especially liked the satellite maps that compared past and current Venice views. If/when I return to Venice, will be able to use this information to view the city in a new light.
Venice in Peril
Would recommend Luca's seminar to anyone interested in both historical and environmental information about Venice. His slides were quite informative and he's very engaging speaker. Even stayed online longer to answer questions AND provided links for further reading and information about sustainable tourism in Venice.
This was my first course on Context, and it was much better than I expected. Luca, the presenter/lecturer, is extremely informed and knowledgeable about many aspects of Venice, history, geology, science, and more, and his presentation is very engaging.
I look forward to more courses!
