Venice is a unique city and part of its uniqueness derives from its trading relationship with the Muslim world. Join an expert to discover how Islam played a role in shaping Venice's history and culture.
This conversation aims at introducing the variety of commercial ties that brought Venice to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards its Eastern extremity. In that vast geographic region stretching from Turkey to the Arabian Peninsula, the Venetian merchants found many trading goods that made their fortune among the European courts that were craving for exotic products. Along with those trading goods, mutual knowing came along; the human relationships implied the transmission of cultural values and scientific knowledge.
After a short discussion on how the Venetian state developed its trading network through the Mediterranean Sea, the first section will present the history of Venice's relationships with Muslim people: the Saracens, the Mamluks, and the Ottomans, among others. The second section of the conversation will introduce the life of Muslim merchants in Venice, providing information on their everyday life in the town. The third section will take us through Venice, discovering those buildings and those architectonic details that have been influenced by Islamic architecture.
Examples of Venetian paintings and works of art hosted in the city museums will be used to illustrate each different topic. Led by an expert on Islamic Archaeology, Matteo Gabbrielli, this interactive seminar will provide a general introduction to the relationship between Venice and the Islamic world. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased desire to know more about the multicultural history of Venice.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
