One of the first artists, or superstars in the history of art, Albrecht Dürer is a monolithic presence. With a vast output of paintings, prints, and drawings, he is the shaping figure of the Northern Renaissance.
Born in Germany in Nuremberg, Albrecht Dürer is celebrated as one of the very best German artists, as well as one of the leading figures of the Northern Renaissance. Dürer was not just a painter; he was talented in other areas such as engraving, ink drawing, printing, and writing on topics such as geometry, architecture, and engineering.
In this seminar, Sabry Amroussi will try to unravel this often mysterious master. Discussing works in various genres and media, one will come away with an increased understanding of this self-mythologizing genius. With his humor and knowledge, Sabry Amroussi will use the broad spectrum of works and even some original prints by Dürer to engage you in understanding this complicated but revolutionary artist.
Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and also has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection on Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

Of all of the many seminars and courses I've taken with Sabry, I think this was my favorite. I knew something of Durer but came away knowing so much more. Sabry gave another excellent presentation with his characterisitic style and flare and left me wanting to learn more!
Like all of Sabry's classes, this one was brilliant and conversational. He has the knack for making every topic into a story. Extraordinary teacher.
Mr. Amroussi is an expert art historian whose seminar on the Ghent altarpiece I enjoyed very much. This one seemed to integrate history and art history with less confidence, but I'm sure the next time the courses is offered a number of minor chronological glitches will be smoothed out.
