An expanded version of the Dürer seminar, this course will discuss the life and work of Albrecht Dürer in full, immersing ourselves in all aspects of the artist’s creative oeuvre. This seminal figure in the development of art, and the 'inventor' of the Northern Renaissance, produced a vast body of work unmatched by few of his peers. In three sessions, we will discuss Dürer’s work by medium, paintings, drawing, and prints alike, using high-resolution images to zoom into the works in the fullest detail.

Led by a specialist in the Golden Age, Sabry Amroussi, we'll see this artist brought to light by both his humor and knowledge. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a profound understanding of the life and legacy of Albrecht Dürer.

Lecture 1: Introduction and Painting

Our first session will introduce us to the life and times of Dürer, tracing his life in Nuremberg and travels to Italy. We will also dive deep into the creation of his most seminal and less well-known paintings.

Lecture 2: Drawing

Our second session will focus on Dürer’s talent as a draughtsman. Together we will examine his output of drawings, many of which served as sketches for his paintings, the source material for his engravings, and inspiration for other collaborative projects.

Lecture 3: Printmaking and Legacy

Our final session will examine his printmaking, both engravings and woodblocks, and his lasting influence on other artists, including Rembrandt.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and also has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects, and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection on Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.
