Athens' street art is the latest big thing on this millennia-old city; an 'epidemic' of large, colorful, yet meaningful murals, that provide a 'window' to the local history and culture. Mainly inspired by the recent huge financial crisis, the artwork reflects present society and its problems, wishing to make a statement and send across messages.

Athens was never truly associated with street culture - like Berlin, Madrid, or Sao Paulo - but during the last decade, it has become the absolute hotpot, the ÌÓEuropean Mecca' for young street artists. Although graffiti has always been regarded as vandalism, street art, on the other hand, is more accepted as it is meant to embellish, it is more elaborate and meaningful. In this conversation, weÌÓll dive into the background of this creative explosion of public art, get acquainted with its key players and their styles, and decipher their deeper messages; thus, we will comprehend better the present local society.

Led by art historian, a former lecturer at the Hellenic American University of Athens and certified tour guide Nadia Pavlikaki, this interactive seminar will surprise you with the aesthetics, skills, and contemplative spirit of the Athenian street art scene. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better appreciation of this controversial art form.

Nadia was born and raised in Athens. She holds a B.A. in History and Archaeology and an M.A. in History of Art from the National University of Athens. She has worked as an art historian for the Greek Ministry of Culture, as well as for private art collections and art exhibitions. Nadia is also a licensed professor of Spanish, having taught for many years as an adjunct lecturer of Spanish language and culture and of Greek Civilization at the Hellenic American University of Athens. Nadia enjoys sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm in each and every tour, 'bringing History to life' and making her guests' tours 'the highlight of their vacation', as they often tell her. Her storytelling and interpretation of the facts will provide you with the context and insight you were hoping for!
