Amália Rodrigues, fado singer of international fame, is a Portuguese cultural icon. Her extraordinary talent brought traditional fado music from the streets of Lisbon to the world. Join art historian Estela Mendes on an exploration of fado music and its most unique voice.

Fado music began in working-class Lisbon in the late nineteenth century, where Amália’s unusual talent was discovered. Born in 1920 to a low-income family, Amália earned her living selling lemons on the city streets before becoming the rising star in local fado houses and singing competitions. Early in her career, she traveled widely, singing in Portuguese communities and international venues. Amália reigned on the most prestigious stages of the world.

From 1933 to 1974, during Portugal’s long and brutal dictatorship, the country was impoverished, and the populace longed for dignity and freedom. Amália dedicated her lyrics to the Portuguese people in struggle. A revolutionary in her art, Amália created partnerships with other musicians from different backgrounds and added her interpretations to some of the already profound and melancholic fado genre.

In this conversation, led by an art historian, we will learn about Amália’s transformational role in the history of Fado music. The presentation will include recordings of her music to allow us to listen to her voice and reflect on her words.
Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of Amália’s legacy as a Portuguese cultural icon.
