This virtual tour combines the ancient history of Jerusalem with the history of archaeological excavations in the city. We will start with the city of David and the history of the First Temple and move to the archaeological sites from the First and the Second Temple periods and on the 200 years history of their discovery (the Broad Wall, the Western Wall Tunnels, the Jerusalem Archaeological Park (Davidson Centre), the Herodian Quarter, the Burned House and the Wailing Wall.

No one can imagine the Holy Scriptures without Jerusalem and no one can imagine Jerusalem without its ancient history. However, this fascinating history of prehistoric and ancient Jerusalem which started more than 4000 years ago, remained covered by dust for hundreds of years. The first archeological excavations of the nineteenth century started to reveal to the world hidden treasures belonging to the stone age, to the ancient Egyptian presence, to the times of kings David and Solomon, to the times of Hasmoneans, and to the Greek and Roman presence in the city.

The 150 years of excavations reveal to the eyes of the nowadays observer the same pavements, walls, stairs, mosaics, tombs, baths, and columns that were exposed to the eyes of the city inhabitants, pilgrims, visitors, and soldiers thousands of years ago. These revealed the city where Jesus walked in the last week before his crucifixion and the city on which the Talmud said: “Ten measures of beauty descended to the world, nine were taken by Jerusalem” and “Whoever did not see Jerusalem in its days of glory, never saw a beautiful city in their life”.

Led by historian Anna Novikov, an expert on the European presence in the Middle East and Jerusalem, this interactive seminar will take us to an archeological tour in Jerusalem from the beginning of its existence through the days of its glory, combined with the history of archeological excavations which revealed this glory to the world. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge of what Jerusalem looked like in the time of the Biblical kings and temples and of the 150 years’ history of archaeological excavations in the city.
