Volume 2: Artemisia Gentileschi and How Her Paintings Speak with Hilary Bockham
Regular price $36.50 Save $-36.50
Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most important 17th-century painters, was born in Rome, and home tutored by her father. At 17 her rape by his colleague, the subsequent trial during which SHE was tortured, and her association with other painters who followed Caravaggio's new style have, all too often, overshadowed her genius. In this conversation, we will redress this imbalance by focusing primarily on an analysis of her breathtaking work.
The seminar will include a quick overview of Renaissance and Baroque painting techniques and a description of current styles in the places where she lived and worked in the early 1600s; Rome, Florence, Venice, and Naples. It will include an in-depth look at how Artemisia developed and adapted her natural genius; from a homebound illiterate Roman girl to one of the most important and glamorous artists of her age, whose work was sought after by Kings, Princes, and Dukes throughout Europe. She became one of the literary, musical, and artistic elite of the western world. We'll follow her fascinating journey through her paintings and her recently discovered letters.
Led by an expert on 1600s Italian Art, Hilary Bockham, this interactive seminar will dive deep into an analysis of Artemisia Gentileschi's paintings. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Italian Baroque art and of the part that Artemisia played in its development.
This is the second conversation in a two-part series about the life and works of Artemisia Gentileschi.

Volume 2: Artemisia Gentileschi and How Her Paintings Speak with Hilary Bockham
Hilary has been one of our experts for fifteen years. She was born in England, where she studied Art and Literature and began her career there as an art teacher. A few years later she followed her interest in fashion and costume and became an internationally successful fashion designer. She designed costumes for several international dance companies and was a guest lecturer at several UK Design Colleges. For ten years before her arrival in Italy in 2005 she ran her own Exhibition Services company, providing customized services for Art Galleries and Museums throughout Britain. She specializes in Renaissance and Baroque art in Rome.

Another excellent seminar with Hilary Bockham. I wish I had managed to see this one BEFORE I went to see the expo at the National Gallery. I appreciated the paintings much more on my laptop through her eyes than I even did up close in the (nearly empty) museum. Her explanations about time, place and context also really help to appreciate the art. She is always a fantastic speaker.
Hilary Bockham's lectures are well organized, well illustrated, clearly presented and very informative. I have greatly enjoyed both of her Zoom sessions on Artemisia Gentileschi, and look forward to hearing more from her.

This is how art history should be taught, discussing both technique (and putting that in historical context) and picture content/design. I especially appreciated the discussion of how the evolution of paints over time influenced technique and pictorial qualities. Hilary's presentation style is very engaging. I may take the class again because there was so much valuable content I want to make sure I remember it!
