This seminar will explore the narrative power of Giotto frescoes in the Upper Church of San Francesco in Assisi: through an intertwined path of history, art, and society we’ll discover how these revolutionary masterpieces have "emotionally" shaped the roots of Italian and European culture.

We’ll be diving into some selected scenes (out of the twenty-eight) and through an intertwined path of history, art, and society, we’ll discover how these revolutionary masterpieces have emotionally shaped the roots of Italian and European culture. In the late thirteenth centuyr, Assisi was not only the construction site of a grand, commemorative architecture to honor Saint Francis and to house his relics, but we can also symbolically see it as a vibrant workshop where the “emotional” principles of the European modern art were born.

The representation of “pathos” in Giotto’s frescoes was not only to be intended as a touching, detailed depiction of human feelings, but its revolutionary impact lies in the subtle and powerful connections with its historical context. Through an intriguing investigation, we’ll discover how Giotto envisioned new social and political values through his art which changed the course of history for the next centuries.

Led by an expert on Florence’s Art History, Federica Pellazza, this interactive seminar will explore these extraordinary masterpieces while blending together historical and artistic perspectives. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Giotto and his historical context, accompanied by a deeper conscience about its revolutionary impact in our modern society.

Ms. Pellazza is brilliant in her lectures, thoroughly absorbed in her material, and attentive to the possible interpretations she needs to engage of her material. Historical context, details of painting, and the consequences of Giotto's frescoes for European painting were all covered so well. It was a fascinating, wonderful seminar.
