This conversation will take us on a journey through the last 50 years of East End history, beginning with the mass arrival of Bengalis in the early 1970's. In that time, the East End has gone through one of the most incredible transformations one could imagine. We will discover some of the important moments in that transformation and meet some of those people responsible, including Banksy, the world's most famous Street Artist.

The virtual walk will also explore parts of Shoreditch, an area that a Century ago contained one of the worst slums in Europe but today is lined with designer stores, luxury hotels and Michelin starred restaurants. Using a mixture of photography, maps, and Google street-view, we will travel through the streets of the East End from the comfort of your armchair. Pepe's hopes that this virtual walk will inspire a visit to this fantastically vibrant part of London in the future.

Led by London Blue Badge Tourist Guide Pepe Martinez. Despite his rather Spanish name, Pepe is a born and bred Londoner and has lived in the East End his entire life. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of this eclectic enclave.

Pepe was born and bred in London and has lived here all his life, apart from a year travelling the world in his 20s. His professional life began working as a stage manager, followed by 15 years as a Tour Manager leading tours of the UK, Ireland, and Europe, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and The Middle and Far East. He qualified as a London Blue Badge Guide in 2011 and was honored to receive the award for Best Overall Practical Exam Guide. A keen cyclist, Pepe loves the outdoors and walking and he believes the best way to see a city is on foot. He loves the theatre and tries to attend as often as possible and is usually ahead of the game when it comes to recommendations. Pepe is particularly good at working with children and keeping them engaged and entertained.
