From the banks of the Thames to the snowy peaks of Bohemian Switzerland, beer has been a fact of life in northern and central Europe for generations. In particular, four nations have been colored by their connection to beer: Britain, Belgium, Germany, and the Czech Republic. We will learn how the key beer styles emerged, where the innovations that created both modern industrial and craft brewing were born, and where the richest beer-drinking cultures still exist.

This seminar, led by an award-winning beer and travel journalist, will lead participants down the well-trodden road between London and Munich, taking in the most exciting points along the way: East Kent, Flanders, Brussels, The Rhine Valley, Bamberg, Pilsen, Prague and the gentle, rolling hills of the Oberpfalz, where Europe’s last medieval beer culture clings on.

We’ll discuss the key beer styles, the cultures that created them, the cultural links that tie these nations together, and the sometimes nationalistic impulses that have driven them apart. We’ll discuss flavor, ingredients, pubs and bars, religion, current trends in European brewing, and the impact of locality on beer.

Led by an expert on beer and European travel, Will Hawkes, this interactive seminar will shine new light on the intricacies of European brewing and beer culture. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of European beer culture - and a desire to return there as soon as it's safe to do so.

Will Hawkes is an award-winning journalist who specialises in travel and beer.
