In this seminar, we will discover how artists like Pieter Breugel and Jeroen Bosch, often sadly overshadowed by the more prominent names who came after, actually ignited a humanistic revolution in art and paved the way for the Masters of the 17th century.
Real globetrotters, these 16th-century artists incorporated Influences from all over Europe into their work. They distilled the new ideas infiltrating Dutch intellectual life into some of the greatest works of art ever made in the Low Countries. In addition to the big names like Bosch and Breugel, this seminar will introduce you to some fantastic artists now only known in small circles of art historians and dealers. Hendrick Golzius, Cornelis van Haarlem, Jan van Scorel and Maarten van Heemskerck were world famous is their days, and rightfully so.
Led by art historian Sabry Amroussi, a specialist in Netherlandish art, participants will come away with a profound appreciation for this hithero neglected period in Dutch art. With his trademark enthusiasm and humor, Sabry will discuss these masters with flair and gusto.
Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and also has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects, and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection on Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

When people ask me how good Sabry is as a presenter, I say to them "I'd listen to him talk about something I don't even know, and probably love it too!" And this seminar is a perfect example of that. I knew very little about Dutch artists outside the "greatest hits" and Sabry introduced us to some with his characteristic energy, passion and flair. This 90 minutes went by in a heartbeat.
