Join us to discover paradise on earth in the Canary Islands. Together we will explore the history, geography, and local culture of each of the seven islands that form this Spanish archipelago. Although it is a world-famous tourist destination, there is more to the Canary Islands than just sandy beaches and fresh local fish.

Located at the southernmost border of Europe, facing the coast of Morocco, the Canary Islands are rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. From fabled black sand beaches to deep green inland valleys where vineyards and banana plantations grow side by side, the variety of landscapes is impressive. Conquered by the Castillian navy in the fifteenth century, the Canary Islands share deep ties with Spain but are also linked to Latin American thanks to Christopher Colombus who stopped here on his explorations of the Atlantic. The local population, known as Guanches share accents and dialects with the Lebanese and Indian invaders of their islands centuries ago.

Today, the local economy is entirely dependent on tourism. While the increased international visibility of the islands has brought some positive changes, overdevelopment is a serious concern. We will meet some local activists who have succeeded in raising awareness about the unique natural and cultural patrimony and how they hope to protect and preserve it for future generations.

Led by an expert in history of art, Marta Lopez Beriso, this interactive seminar will discover the seven islands of the archipelago. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of what makes The Canary Islands such a welcoming destination.
