Join art historian Rachele Fiorelli to explore Caravaggio’s period in Sicily and learn how the island influenced the master’s art and his life. We will also recount the mystery of his stolen painting, taken in 1969 and never seen again.

Caravaggio, famous for his volatile nature and frequent arrests, fled Rome to escape persecution. Stopping along the way in Naples, Malta, and then Sicily, he was aided by his patrons, two noblewomen of Sicilian heritage, Costanza and Vittoria Colonna. Their influence was essential to his safe arrival on the island and his artistic output during his stay.

This seminar will trace the last tragic years of Caravaggio’s life. We will focus on the works he produced and the people he met during his time in Sicily, and why he was drawn there to start with. We will analyze the works he painted in this period and link them to pieces in Rome and Naples, recalling themes that recur in his career.

We will also dive into the mystery of his stolen masterpiece, the Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence, which once hung in the Oratory of St Lawrence in Palermo. Believed to have been stolen by the mafia in 1969, the painting has never resurfaced

Led by an expert on art history, Rachele Fiorelli, this interactive seminar will explore how closely Caravaggio’s life was linked to Sicily. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about the life of one of the most famous painters in the world.

Rachele Fiorelli completed her studies on Humanities at Palermo University and later earned an MA in Museum Studies in Milan. She began working as a licenced tour guide in 2017, focusing her knowledge on Sicilian painting and sculpture. She has given lectures on Art History and she has acquired a special competence in Outsider and Folk art.

Re-imagining Caravaggio

This is an original and outstanding seminar on Caravaggio’s final years and final paintings. Rachele brings her deeply personal Sicilian response to Caravaggio, as well as an art historian’s expertise. I have taken multiple virtual seminars on Caravaggio over the past several months and this is one of the best. helping me see new details and contexts. I have also taken many Context seminars and this is one of the very best: well-conceived, well-organized, passionate, clear, and illuminating.
