Join a Caravaggio author and art historian for an in-depth examination of Caravaggio’s emotional late masterpieces as he fled between Naples, Malta, and Sicily, wishing he could return to Rome.
In this conversation, we’ll learn that dark times can give rise to artistic masterpieces, as some of Caravaggio’s best works were made while fleeing from papal justice, traveling between Naples, Sicily and the Island of Malta. Beginning in Naples, we will discover how many people were already waiting for him to commission him for large canvases or private artworks. Along this journey, we’ll discuss the depth of the meaning of engaging masterpieces such as the Seven Acts of Mercy and the Flagellation of Christ.
We will then take a boat to the Island of Malta, where Caravaggio became a Knight for a while, to spend some time marveling at the amazing beauty of his Beheading of St. John for the cathedral of Valletta. And then take another sea voyage to Sicily, to discover his works made for Messina and Siracusa. We’ll venture back to the Mediterranean sea towards Naples to see his very last and touching works created before he died in southern Tuscany while on his way back to Rome.
Led by art historian, professor, and published Caravaggio author Sara Magister, this interactive discussion will analyze a curated selection of Caravaggio’s works. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of this formidable figure.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.
