This seminar examines the work and influence of Carlo Scarpa, the modern Italian architect whose designs reflect his deep understanding of and sensitivity to the topography of Venice.
This conversation will explore the work and legacy of Carlo Scarpa, the Venetian-born architect who, despite never sitting for the exams for his professional architect's license, left an indelible mark on the history of the modern built environment in Italy. Famous for his exploration of floating planes and incorporating water into his designs, especially in Venice, Scarpa inserted modernist ideas inflected with a Japanese sensibility into historic structures and neighborhoods throughout Italy. The many works we will consider include his renovation to the Aula Baratto at the Università di Venezia Ca' Foscari; the ticket booth, Venezuelan pavilion, and garden that he contributed to the Venice's Biennale Giardini; the floating levels of the showroom he designed for Olivetti typewriters in Venice's Piazza San Marco; and his unforgettable displays for both the Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice and the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia housed in the Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo.
Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art, architecture, and design, Dr. Jennie Hirsh, this interactive seminar will travel to the sites of Scarpa's buildings, gardens, and innovative interiors in Venice and beyond. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of what distinguishes Scarpa's designs as well as a piqued enthusiasm for visiting Scarpa's sites.
This conversation is part of a series on architects with Dr. Jennie Hirsh. Each session is designed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of the series.

Fascinating Look at Carlo Scarpa

I loved this presentation! I came away with a solid understanding of Carlo Scarpa and the recurring themes of his major projects thanks to Dr. Hirsh's clear and concise explanations. I loved the detail she went into when describing Scarpa's use of favorite elements (water, bridges, metal, small interesting details) in a way that will allow me to visit these sites with a whole new perspective. I'm really looking forward to visiting the Querini-Stampalia Foundation and the Olivetti Showroom again, and visiting the Brion Cemetery for the first time. I really appreciate the excellent photos Dr. Hirsh selects for her presentations, along with the great care with which she presents the material. Looking forward to her upcoming Conversation on Tadao Ando. Grazie mille!
