Join a historian to learn about coup d’etat, love stories, ambitious reforms, victorious wars and the unique personality of the most famous empress of Russia - Catherine the Great. We’ll discuss her full participation in the political and cultural life of Europe, hot on the heels of the work begun by Peter the Great.

Together we will explore 18th century Russia and its greatest events through the life of this formidable character. We’ll hear of many interesting stories as we begin our conversation focusing on this our leading protagonist - who was in fact the daughter of an impoverished Prussian prince. We will begin by focusing on the first 18 years of Catherine’s life before she arrived in Russia and got her hands on the throne of the Russian Empire. These were years filled with disappointment and we will learn why this is so in our time together.

We’ll move on to discussing just how she got the title “great” and became one of two great emperors of the country. We will talk about her reforms, her achievements and her weaknesses. We’ll finish up by discussing the private life of Catherine the Great, with tales of lovers, illegitimate children, Royal clashes and much more.

Led by a historian Vadim Malinovsky this seminar will give a deep dive into the lifestyle of the Russian Royal family as well as history of the country of the second part of the 18th century. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the wonderful heritage leftover from Catherine the Great.

Vadim is a historian (MA) who has graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. His focus is contemporary Russian history. He is working on a PhD dissertation on Stalin’s national policy.
