The Mayan civilization is one of the most fascinating ancient civilizations in the world, but also one of the most difficult to understand because of the complex language, geographical barriers, and information lost during the Spanish conquest. This conversation will explore the Chichen Itza archaeological site, specifically the pyramid of Kukulkan.

We will learn the historical context surrounding its magnificent construction as well as more concrete details such as the transformation of limestone into building blocks. By shifting our focus towards mathematics and astronomy, we will understand the physics of the “Feather Snake” phenomenon that occurs bi-annually at Chichen Itza. Then, moving towards an enhanced understanding of the Mayan civilization as a whole, we will explore the Mayan calendars and the series of events leading to Mayan control of most of the Yucatan peninsula.

Led by an expert on history and archeological civilization of Mexico, Luis Martinez, this interactive seminar will explore the most visited building in Chichen Itza. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about the history of Mayan culture.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Luis became a professional archaeological and cultural tour guide after studying tourism at the Instituto Politecnico Nacional. Fluent in Spanish, English, and French, Luis is passionate about cultural immersion, travel, and volunteering. He lives in the Riviera Maya.

This was our first Context Conversation course. We enjoyed the course content and instructor but wished the course included having the instructor at the site and walking around to show us the features he mentioned in the pictures.

Luis was very knowledgeable and engaging. However, I did not understand from the talk description that half the time would be spent on Mayan mathematics or I wouldn’t have purchased. I have been to Chichen Itza and wanted to know more about the site as a whole. Also, Mayans weren’t shorter because they carried limestone for pyramids...it was a nutrition issue.
