The Italian Riviera has attracted the attention of many famous travelers, artists, and VIPs since the nineteenth century and was listed by Forbes in 2019 among the top fifty places to visit in the world. Its natural beauty and interesting geography make it a coveted spot for any tourist (and there are many, three million in 2019 to be exact!) This conversation will explore the history of this region, as well as the traditions, culture, and landscape of the Ligurian Riviera. It’s a fitting seminar for anyone wishing to dig behind the picture-perfect image of Cinque Terre and learn about the true essence of this stunning area.

The internet and the social media are full of stunning pictures and videos taken in the Italian Riviera and particularly in the Cinque Terre, but in spite of all the articles and media coverage, little is known about the life and habits of the people who live “behind the postcard”. Ligurians, the inhabitants of this stunning region, have an incredible history and have lived through very rough times, which has made them incredibly stubborn hard workers.

Led by an expert tourist guide of Cinque Terre, Karen Nilson, this interactive seminar will give participants an overview of the characteristics of an area that is widely known but still keeps jealously at its true soul. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased awareness of what can be concealed even in the most famous tourist resorts.

Karen Nilson was born in Italy to a North American father and an Italian mother. After obtaining her degree in Political Science, she moved to Liguria, where she became a licensed tour guide in 2006. She works mostly in the area of the Cinque Terre, leading groups and individuals to discover the soul of this special region as well as delivering lectures and conversations about the history of the region. She is vice president of a cooperative of tour guides.
