This conversation will discuss two major post-war revolutions that took place in Hungary in 1956 and 1989 and shook up the Communist system forever. We’ll explore both the bloody revolution of 1956 and the largely peaceful Velvet Revolution of 1989 as we discuss the impact they had on both Communist Hungary and within the international sphere. This conversation is well suited for anyone with an interest in Eastern European history and political ideologies.

We’ll begin by exploring the political and cultural environment preceding the 1956 revolution in Hungary. We will learn about the events that catapulted the uprising, leading to invasion and bloodshed as well as the reasons why the revolt was crushed in a mere two weeks. We’ll talk about the deep wounds it left on the country, and despite its failure, we’ll discuss the influence it had for the future.

Next, we’ll explore the democratic initiatives that led to the 1989 demonstrations and ultimately brought down the Iron Curtain. We will explore the controversial political climate resulting in the 1989 socio-political changes and how for decades the Iron Curtain lay heavy over Europe, dividing the continent between the communist East and capitalist West. We’ll take some time to talk about how the memory of Communist Hungary has been erased, re-modeled, or preserved, and the effects of this are still felt today.

Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Easter-Europe under communism in general and the roots of current politics and political sentiments in Hungary in particular
