The artistic center in London in the 1700s was Covent Garden – it was where artists lived, where they had their studios, art schools were set up there and exhibitions organized there. The trades that artists relied on to set up in the area as well, and Covent Garden’s position as a social hub – with its theatres, coffee houses, market, taverns and gambling houses meant it was a place where the classes mixed, providing both inspirations for artworks and patrons for the artists. Arguably this melting pot of artistic elements helped lead to what we call the Golden Age of British Art.

This Conversation will examine what led to Covent Garden becoming an artistic hub in the 1700s and what led important artists such as William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds to choose the area as a fashionable address. We will see how Covent Garden placed artists strategically in between patrons in the Royal Court at Westminster and the wealthy merchants of the City of London and how local craftsmen such as frame makers, colormen, and printers supported artists' work. We will also learn how the 1700s was also a century in which British artists became much more ambitious and campaigned for the first public exhibitions and art schools, which led to even greater success than had been previously achieved by British Artists.

Led by an expert in British art, art history, and tours for families, Sarah Ciacci, this interactive seminar will explore the production of art in London in the 1700s. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the historic London art world, British art and London.
