Communism in Czechoslovakia lasted almost fifty years. This period was a crucial time for the government to bring up a new generation of workers loyal to the idea of communism: this was a very important task. As a result, education and propaganda had to start at an early age and continue throughout the life cycle of the individual. This ensured that communist ideas would be implemented deeply and thoroughly. The younger generation held a special place in the whole ideology - they represented the socialist hope and future.

This conversation will look at the various ways in which propaganda filtered through the brains of innocent children. We’ll discuss pre-school to high school education, we’ll look at how kids spent their free time, and we’ll explore the public celebrations and events that the whole nation essentially had to participate in.

Led by an expert on central European history, Tereza Libichová, this interactive seminar will explore the various ways that propaganda towards children used to work in communist Czechoslovakia. Participants will emerge with a deeper understanding of communism, everyday life, and how it affected the 'common' crowds.

Tereza is from the Czech Republic, Prague. Having spent the past 10 years traveling around Central Europe and revealing its secrets to visitors, the complexity of the region and all the states entangled within has become her major topic. She likes to use big historical events as a background for the "little" histories of the locals, which brings vivid and broader perspective to the past events. Tereza studied Comparative Literature and East European Studies (with a specialization in Russian Language and Literature) at Charles University in Prague.
