England’s Cathedrals are the nation’s glory. Towering over the landscape, they are the most spectacular and lasting accomplishment of the English people, arguably more so than the hundreds of palaces, castles, and stately homes dotting the country. This seminar will explore the best examples of England's Medieval cathedrals - Wells, Winchester, and Salisbury - and share the secrets of each magnificent edifice.

For nearly a millennium, these churches have been destinations for pilgrims seeking faith, consolation, and beauty. They have also survived the destructive years of the Protestant Reformation and the violence of The English Civil War when many cathedrals were used as garrisons for Oliver Cromwells’ troops and as stables for their horses.

An English Cathedral is never monotonous, and it is most definitely never dull, especially if you know where to look. Guided by a very visual presentation, this seminar will explore the majesty and beauty of the architecture, the exquisite works of the stonemasons and woodcarvers, as well as the link between the craftsmanship of the 13th century with the 21st Century through one of the most stunning pieces of modern sculpture in any English cathedral.

Sean Moran, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and one of the UK’s elite Blue Badge Guides, regularly works with art groups in Wells and Winchester Cathedrals and guides every Sunday in Salisbury. He knows each of the buildings and their contents intimately, is familiar with all their hidden secrets, is passionate about their history, and has one or two amusing stories to tell.

Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the key architectural and artistic aspects of the three medieval cathedrals, along with some remarkable stories of their continued survival. You do not need to be an architectural student to enjoy this seminar, just a lover of history and beauty.

Since leaving university in 1982, Sean has lived and worked across the globe in a nearly 30-year career as a senior executive in financial services. He put his skills and knowledge to work in the Charity Sector in the UK for 7 years but decided life was too short to not focus entirely on his passions for people, history, art and architecture. When not guiding, Sean is restoring a Georgian House and serving as a Parish Councillor. He is a freeman of the City of London and a freeman of the City Livery company of Clockmakers. He lives in London and Wiltshire.
