Prepare your flutes and your palates for a pleasant surprise. After this seminar, you may say goodbye to champagne and prosecco in favor of their younger cousins: English Sparkling wines. There have been two really exciting culinary developments taking place in Britain over the last two or three decades. The first is artisanal cheese. The second is English sparkling wine. It is an industry with great potential that has gone straight into the premium wine category with its high quality. In this conversation, we will learn about what English sparkling wines taste like, while at the same time discovering how to match it with British cheese and other local delicacies.

English wine is placed in the context of other sparkling wines including Champagne, Cava, and Prosecco, in terms of methods of production, grape varieties, and pricing. This seminar also looks at factors that are making its production possible, including perfect soil types, increasing sunshine hours, and enough warmth to ripen grapes, as well as royal approval and investment from, of all quarters, Champagne houses!

Led by university lecturer Annabel Jackson, a wine and food anthropologist, this interactive seminar explores the emergence of this most sparkling of wines. Designed to inform curiosity, as well as future culinary travels, participants will come away with an enhanced understanding of the nooks and nuances of the world of wine.

Annabel Jackson has always been around food. She was raised in a large farming family in the south of England, and began cooking seriously at the age of 11. She loves cities, however, and lived in Hong Kong for more than 20 years before returning to London where she attained an MA in Anthropology of Food at the School of Oriental & African Studies; and she is now studying for her PhD. She is the author of 14 books, including 6 cookbooks, all of which cover Chinese or Asian cuisines including her key speciality, Macanese cooking. She has undertaken research into the immigrant Chinese catering community in London, but is also fascinated by how many immigrant groups have shaped the British palate, and contributed to such a dynamic food scape. She's also a wine lecturer and writer, and is currently working on a super cool consumer wine app to be launched in the UK in late 2019. She is an Advanced Ambassador of the Academy of Wines of Portugal.

This conversation is suitable for adults over 21 years old.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
