This conversation offers an amusing and informative foray into the delicious foods and lush dining customs of ancient Egypt. Discover fascinating tidbits about Cleopatra’s dinner parties including why guests wore wax cones; how Egyptians kneaded dough with their feet; and the must-serve foods for pyramid builders. Learn about the wonderful delicacies of the lush, fertile Nile Valley and the centuries-old health secrets and remedies of the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs, including their long list of aphrodisiacs and foods that accompanied them in their tombs.

Noted food historian and author of Philosopher’s Kitchen: Recipes from Antiquity, Francine Segan, entertains with tantalizing tales on the dining customs of Ancient Egypt including their writings on wine, health, and even dinner party seating. We’ll discuss how Egypt’s fertile soil was legendary among the ancients. Ancient Greeks, when speaking of a leader with both admirable and negative qualities, would often compare him to the produce of Egypt which yielded, “Both wholesome herbs, and drugs of deadly juice. Learn interesting tidbits like the Egyptian slave’s diet and what tomb excavations reveal the food preferences of upper classes. Discover the many sumptuous ingredients and dishes from Alexandria, that achieved renown throughout the ancient Mediterranean world.

Led by an expert on culinary history, Francine Segan, this interactive seminar will explore the history of dining in Ancient Egypt. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of daily life in ancient Egypt. Participants will receive a list of easy-to-recreate recipes as well as lists of must-try dishes for any visitor to modern Egypt.

Francine Segan is a renowned food historian and James Beard-nominated author of six books. She is a regular on TV, appearing frequently on the Food Network, PBS, Discovery, and History Channels. Francine’s articles have appeared in Saveur, Epicurious, Vogue, and Fine Cooking Magazine and she is an often-featured expert in newspapers including the Wall St Journal, USA Today, and The New York Times. She lectures across the USA at such prestigious venues as the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, Smithsonian Museum in DC, Virginia Fine Arts Museum, and 92nd St Y, NYC’s premiere cultural center.
