Uncover the quirky, the quaint, and the quixotic sides of New York City’s history during this fast-paced romp through four centuries of change.

Join for a walk (or rather a run) through New York City's tumultuous history! Led by museologist E.Y. Zipris, this seminar will bring to life hidden moments in this famous city's history as told through the lens of objects, photographs, paintings, letters, and yes, even trash. Highlights include a broken pipe smoked in the seventeenth century, a note scribbled on a restaurant napkin that turned the city into a brand, a nineteenth-century apothecary kit, an original maquette of the Statue of Liberty, a late-night guest list for Studio 54, and more. These treasures range from the quirky to the cool to the poignant - much like the city itself.

Led by an expert on museum anthropology, E.Y. Zipris, this interactive seminar will explore New York’s history through a collection of objects and artifacts. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how objects can tell the story of a place and a population.

Please Note: This seminar will repeat some of the same themes as New York Uncovered: A Five-Part City Course with E.Y. Zipris

For over two decades, E.Y. Zipris has studied, worked in, lectured, and written about museums and history. Formerly the Director of Education at the Museum of the City of New York, E.Y. played a leading role in developing its groundbreaking exhibition, New York at Its Core – the city's first-ever comprehensive exhibition. Currently, on faculty at the City University of New York and Teachers College, Columbia University, E.Y. brings her passion for storytelling to audiences of all ages. E.Y. has an EdM in Art Education and Museum Studies from Teachers College and an MA in Museum Anthropology from Columbia University and lives in the Upper West Side with her husband and daughter.

One of the best!

This is one of the best presentations I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot). The presentation was very engaging in both content (objects selected and the information around them) and presentation style. Just fabulous!

A delightful learning experience

A fascinating way to cruise through the history of New York. From trash to the Statue of Liberty, I learned surprising and interesting details and stories about the history of the island and the city. An inventive way to peer into the objects, people, places and things that tell the story of the past.

Fascinating and informative

This was a fast-moving and interesting class that taught me plenty about New York. A new perspective. EY Zipris is an engaging speaker. I will be taking more of her classes.
