The Mycenaean culture dominated the Late Bronze Age of Greece and laid the foundations of Greek antiquity and Western civilization. Through their amazing achievements in architecture and art, this conversation will explore Mycenaean ideology in this enthralling period of human history.

Almost 3,000 years ago, Homer, one of the greatest poets of all time, sung the heroic deeds of Kings, heroes, and demi-gods who belonged in the glorious past of Greece. Centuries later, Greek tragedians, like Aeschylus were still inspired by the powerful yet cursed royal families that once ruled over the land. Formidable warlike Kings and fierce queens dwelt in the ‘’broad-streeted’’ and ‘’golden’’ lands of Mycenae, Pylos, and Tiryns in well-built palaces within Cyclopean walls…Engaging myths turned to tangible reality when Heinrich Schliemann in 1876 lifted the veil which had so long enshrouded the forgotten history of Greece.

""I have gazed on the face of Agamemnon,"" Schliemann reportedly said as he discovered the exquisite golden mask, the Mona Lisa of prehistory to the mythical King of Mycenae. More than 100 years after Schliemann’s discovery, numerous excavations have brought to light citadels, palaces, and tombs of Mycenaeans, who thrived in the Late Bronze Age for more than five centuries. We will explore their rise to power in an era of globalization amidst the mighty Minoans, Hittites, and Egyptians and their apogee as expressed in architecture and art, in life and death. We’ll discuss their influence on Minoan Crete, and their inevitable fall in the context of the wider destructions that swept away the Eastern Mediterranean at the end of the thirteenth century.

Led by an expert on the prehistoric archaeology of the Aegean, archaeologist MA Dimitra Pilarinou, this interactive seminar will explore the Mycenaean civilization in all its multifaceted aspects. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the Mycenaean civilization in the Mainland of Greece and the Cretomycenaean culture of Crete.

Dimitra Pilarinou is a Greek archaeologist and Licensed Tour Guide with a Masters degree in Prehistoric Archaeology of the Aegean. She has worked in excavations all around Greece, has given speeches on various topics in Seminars and Congresses, and has appeared on documentaries about the Minoans on History Channel and Travel Channel.
