Greek wine, often overshadowed by its Mediterranean counterparts in France, Italy, and Spain is in the midst of a revival. This seminar will focus on Greek vineyards and vintages to discover gifted young winemakers leaving their mark on the region. We will explore the terroir, the climate, and the indigenous varietals that make Greek wine so exciting to wine aficionados. We will also look at the history of wine in Greece and its ancient roots.

In the last 15 years, Greek wine has steadily gained recognition. 'Assyrtiko' and 'Agiorgitiko' wines are winning awards in international competitions and are finding a place on the wine lists of many sought after restaurants across the globe. Wine lovers are discovering an exciting new region. The island of Crete, with its high mountains and cool slopes, volcanic Santorini, the lush mainland Nemea in the south, Goumenissa on the north, are some of the Protected Designations of Origin (P.D.O.) that we will learn about. We will explore some of the best vineyards and the unique indigenous varieties, some of which go back more than 3,500 years. We will unravel the history of Greek wine and its fantastic revival today.

Led by an expert in Greek wine and travel, Ourania Margomenou, this interactive seminar will introduce Greek wine to wine adventurists. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation of one of the best-kept secrets, namely Greek wine!

Ourania Margomenou takes immense pleasure in sharing her passion for food, wine, and cake with travelers that visit Greece. A cook herself, she studied Hospitality Administration in the US. Great basic introduction

The presenter did a nice job of assembling a basic introduction to Greek Wine. She gave enough history to put the current wine making landscape in Greece in its context today. She introduced the major growing regions and the major varietals. The presentation moved along and she was careful not to let herself get bogged down in detail. She communicated both knowledge and passion for this subject.
