In this webinar, we will travel through the history of the vast collection of Russia’s State Hermitage Museum. We will begin in the second half of the 18th century with the renowned Russian Empress Catherine the Great. The end of our conversation will be marked by dramatic events of the 20th century such as the Russian Revolution and World War Two. We will learn how the museum began with a mere 300 canvases and over 200 years later has amassed around 3 million exhibits.

We will discuss great works by world-famous masters such as Da Vinci and Titian, Rembrandt and Rubens, Van Gogh, and Picasso. We will virtually tour through the official interiors of the Winter Palace and will see exhibits related to the history of Imperial Russia. After the conversation, we will understand how diverse the collection and rooms of the Hermitage really are.

Led by a Saint Petersburg based historian Vadim Malinovskiy this conversation offers a crash course into this topic. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, this interactive seminar will give an overview of the art collection, architecture, interiors, and history of the Hermitage museum including the Winter Palace.

Vadim is a historian (MA) who has graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. His focus is contemporary Russian history. He is working on a PhD dissertation on Stalin’s national policy.
