Chocolate may be one of the most enigmatic, powerful, and symbolic elements of food created by humankind. A combination of its pre-Columbian origin, its unique use in rituals and ceremonies, and its symbolism in ancient cultures make the chocolate one of the most fascinating themes of study, not only in the pre-Hispanic civilizations where it was developed but also in its global distribution and commercialization in Europe and the rest of the world.

In this Conversation, we will learn about the different ways to prepare chocolate from a pre-Hispanic perspective and how the uses of chocolate, but not the love, have changed over the years. Led by Mexican cultural scholar Luis Luis-Martinez, this interactive seminar will examine the development of chocolate in the pre-Colombian era through the modern day. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how chocolate developed through the ages.

If you are joining this Conversation, Luis recommends that you have some chocolate on hand (could be a chocolate cake, bar, drink, or another variation of your choice).

Born and raised in Mexico City, Luis became a professional archaeological and cultural tour guide after studying tourism at the Instituto Politecnico Nacional. Fluent in Spanish, English, and French, Luis is passionate about cultural immersion, travel, and volunteering. He lives in the Riviera Maya.
