Monaco is a storybook land of romance and extravagance starring dashing princes, glamorous movie stars, and their charming life of castles, yachts, and fast cars, set against a brilliant technicolor Riviera backdrop of blue skies and sparkling sea – certainly the stuff of dreams. This Conversation takes a look at the myths and legends of this fabled principality which, while small in actual size (half that of New York’s Central Park), looms large in our collective imaginations.

Situated on the Mediterranean coast near the Italian border, the story begins with the dramatic capture of a Genovese fort atop Le Rocher (the Rock of Monaco) through a cunning ruse. An intruder, posing as a monk, gains access to the citadel which is then claimed in the name of the House of Grimaldi. The family’s hold over the area, however, was tenuous. After the siege in 1297, it took another hundred years and more for the family to secure its position. In 1793, captured by revolutionary forces, Monaco passed to the French, then to the Kingdom of Sardinia, and then back to the French until sovereignty was restored in 1861. Independence came at a cost (the loss of significant territory), yet the wild success of a gambling establishment founded in 1869 under Charles III of Monaco, brought about the abolition of income tax for citizens and Monaco became a haven for the wealthy.

Today Monaco’s fairytale story and rarefied air can be sampled and enjoyed in its candy-cane royal flags and emblems, its imposing and lavishly decorated palace, the midday spectacle of the changing of the guards, its eccentric pastel mansions, manicured parks, and exotic botanical gardens along with stunning panoramic views of mountains, coast, and sea. On the other side of the yacht-filled port, we admire the fancy luxury automobiles lined up at the entrance to the elegant Belle Epoque Casino and Salle Granier Opera House. Monaco also offers a world-renown Oceanographic Museum and is host to the exciting Formula One Grand Prix in May.

Led by an expert on the history and art of Southern France, Pamela Morton, this interactive seminar will explore the wonders of Monaco. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will leave with a more rounded understanding of the history, culture, and natural beauty of Monaco.

Originally from the US, Pamela has lived in France (Aix-en-Provence and Marseille) for 25 years. Pamela teaches studio art and art history for American university programs in Aix. She trained in art restoration in Italy and has a background in museum work as a curatorial assistant and program director. She is also an artist working in mixed media -- drawing and painting.
