In this conversation, we will concentrate on the Jewish presence in Amsterdam, a compelling and fascinating story spanning 500 hundred years of history. From the settlement of Sephardic Jews from Spain in the 1580s to the tragedies of World War Two, this talk takes us through the stories connected with the extremely influential Jewish communities of Amsterdam.

As more than 10% of Amsterdam was of Jewish descent before the war, these communities left their mark on every aspect of Amsterdam's rich history; from the influence on Rembrandt and other artists and architects to Dutch cuisine, their vast trading network, and the splendor of the world-famous Portuguese Synagogue, for a long time the worlds biggest synagogue and pride of the Sephardic communities.

Not necessarily a holocaust tour (Sabry Amroussi believes the Jewish presence in Amsterdam is a story in 500 years of history, rather than focusing on those 5 years) this seminar leaves you with a profound understanding of what it was and is to be Jewish in Amsterdam, and how these proud communities were an integral part of life in Mokum (Hebrew for place or safe haven, and also the de facto nickname for Amsterdam.).

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian specializing in the Golden Age and Jewish History of Amsterdam. His background gives him a unique interpretation and knowledge about Amsterdam's once-thriving Jewish communities, and he loves sharing that knowledge, from the riches, gold, and precious books from the Portuguese Synagogue to the tragedies and his family stories of the second world war.
