In this conversation, we are joined by a local Israeli expert to learn how Jews have been lenient and open-minded about modernity. We’ll trace Jewish histories from centuries before until today to understand how laws have evolved, adapted, or assimilated. This is a fitting conversation for anyone with an interest in Jewish history and practices.

Faith can be expressed in different ways. Jewish law has very strict guidelines and rules to fulfill a Jewish life. Sometimes old rules don't fit the time and place. Throughout history, Jews all over the world have lived in 'the fork of the road' keeping the traditions or assimilating. In these cases, Jews have always looked to spiritual leaders to mediate a solution.

The compromises that are found in some Jewish communities are extremely creative. The ongoing struggle of Jews to reinvent the faith keeps on today. The need to be creative has been the way this ancient faith still remains relevant. Led by an expert on history, Ronen Gurievsky, this interactive seminar will show how rules can be bent for the greater cause. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of how the Jewish faith has kept its people by keeping up with time.

Ronen always loved traveling and the outdoors as he was growing up in Israel. After graduating high school, he volunteered on a kibbutz in the south of the country for a year. Once drafted into the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), he served in an airborne infantry unit; Ronen is still active in the reserves. A native-born Israeli, Ronen has always been passionate about the rich, complex history the country has to offer. He focused his education on Israel studies at Haifa University. Ronen has been working as a guide since 2006. To further his passion, he guides in eastern Europe as well. His primary interests, shaped by the region in which he grew up, are religion, geopolitics, history, agro-tech, and business.
