Join Dr. Guillaume Durand, French historian, to learn about the life and legacy of Joan of Arc for the anniversary of her birth on January 6th, 1412. We’ll explore the historical context of fifteenth-century France, the life and realizations of Joan, and finally her trial(s) and her impact in the course of the Hundred Years' war. Peasant, warrior, martyr, mystic, the maid of Orléans, and a lady who entirely dedicated her life to save France at the request of God. Meet Joan of Arc.

Our seminar will start with an understanding of the difficult situation where the kingdom of France was in the fifteenth century as we discuss the Hundred Years’ War, the Black Death, “scorched earth” raids, and an unstable country with fighting factions. We’ll move on to discuss Joan of Arc’s life during the period when France was trying to gain independence from England. We’ll discuss her meeting with the Dauphin Charles VII in 1429 and the siege of Orléans. This victory led to the coronation of Charles VII as King of France at Reims and the beginning of France becoming its own independent nation.

We’ll learn of Joan of Arc’s injury while besieging Paris and her capture in 1430 by the Burgundians, who were the French allies of England. We’ll discuss her trial (for witchcraft, heresy, and for dressing as a man), her subsequent torture, and finally the decision by the English to burn her alive at the stake on May 30th, 1431. We’ll conclude with a discussion of the fate of Joan after her death: the reopening of her case by Pope Callixtus III under the request of Joan’s mother, Isabelle Romée, and more broadly the role she played in the Hundred Years’ war.

Led by Guillaume Durand Ph.D., a French historian, art historian, and archaeologist, expert on Ancient and Medieval France, this seminar will explore the main facets of Joan of Arc contextualized in the rivalries between France and England. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the complexity of this character as well as the remaining questions historians wonder.

Passionate about the regions and countries at the crossroad of civilizations, Guillaume Durand Ph.D. has long standing expertise in Ancient art and archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean Basin. Assistant dean and professor in archaeology and art history at the Institute for American Universities and the American College of the Mediterranean in Aix-en-Provence, France, Guillaume has traveled many times in Iran during these six past years in order to study the Persian Empires. He is also a tourist guide / lecturer in this country for French citizens.

Dr. Durand's did an excellent job of putting Joan of Arc in historical context. I felt it was the perfect level of detail and appreciated the resources he provided for those who wanted to go deeper.
Only problem I had was that the audio cut out several times.
