Whether fully familiar with global Buddhist history and wisdom or just a beginner, this lecture-conversation serves as a general overview of the history, greatest temples, and distinctive characteristics of Korean Buddhism.

Together, we will learn how Buddhism came to Korea some 1600 years ago, and then evolved in its distinct scholastic, meditational and devotional styles. We will explore the unique factors that make this main national traditional religion truly “Korean”, within the Northeast Asian context. Participants will experience a fascinating journey through the long, vibrant Buddhist history of the various Korean dynasties, as they evolved between China and Japan. After explaining the overall history of Korean Buddhism and its eight unique features, showing plenty of examples, we will focus on the “Three Treasure Temples”, each exemplifying one of the trinity of supreme Buddhist values. This itself a Korean system unique in all the Buddhist world, and we will tour the best features of these greatest of monasteries, all still today “capitals” of Korean Buddhism, sites of profound enlightenment and top tourist attractions – and as-of last year, now official UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. Led by a renowned expert on the History of Korean Spirituality and Cultural Tourism, Professor David A. Mason, this interactive seminar will inform participants of all that is most interesting about Korean Buddhism. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, learners will come away with an increased fascination with this amazing country's unique Buddhist evolution and treasures.

David A. Mason is a Michigan-born professor of Korean Cultural Tourism at Sejong University, Seoul Campus, and a longtime researcher on Northeast Asian History and the religious characteristics of Korea's mountains. He offers vivid tours with deep contextual insight and fascinating details, telling many old stories relevant to the sites, with warm humor. He has been an academic in South Korea since 1986, and also served as a consultant for the national Ministry of Sports, Culture and Tourism and the United Nations World Tourism Organization for five years. Mason earned a Masters' Degree in the History of Korean Religions from Yonsei University in 1997. He has authored and edited ten books on Korean culture and tourism.
