Undulating hills, mature woodland, and serpentine lakes conjure a vision of the English landscape that has rarely been equaled. This seminar will discuss the profound contribution and legacy of England's most influential landscape architect, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. Charting Brown's journey from humble beginnings to the aristocracy's designer of choice, we will visit some of his most remarkable creations and reveal how he reimagined what the English landscape could be.

Brown cut his teeth designing the garden landscapes surrounding Stowe House. Every window of the mansion frames a view crafted by the hand of Brown. From Stowe, Brown’s name was associated with 260 landscapes before his death at age 67. Brown’s landscapes were typically simple, uncluttered, and restrained, generally comprising sweeping pasture bordered with tree clumps, perimeter shelter-belts, and screens of trees. He swept away the formal parterres and the classically-inspired allusions of the previous age and planted thousands of trees. The resultant landscape was perfectly designed for hunting, shooting, and carriage-riding, pursuits popular in the eighteenth century.

His work is enduring, and the images he created remain embedded in the English character through art and literature. This seminar will explore how Brown achieved herculean earth-moving feats, generated massive wealth for himself, and created a style that can be seen worldwide, from New York to Munich via Sydney.

Led by Dr. Oliver Cox, an expert on eighteenth-century landscape design and contributor to Capability Brown Tercentenary events, this interactive seminar will immerse participants in Brown’s landscapes. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the men and women behind England’s green and pleasant land.
