This seminar will survey the prolific career of Le Corbusier, Swiss-French architect, urban planner, and theorist who left his mark across the globe with ground-breaking private and public structures and innovative urban planning strategies. Join Dr. Jennie Hirsh to explore his complicated life and politics in conjunction with his award-winning work.
Long considered a luminary for his modernist forms and forward-thinking urban planning, Le Corbusier (born Charles-Èdouard Jeanneret, 1887-1965) left a legacy of residential, religious, and institutional architecture across several continents. This seminar will introduce learners to his life and career, focusing on several of the seventeen works that UNESCO designated as World Heritage sites in 2016. Highlights of this lecture include, amongst others, the Villa Jeanneret, Villa La Roche, Villa Savoye, Unité d'Habitation Marseille, Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp, and The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and architecture, Dr. Jennie Hirsh, this interactive seminar will introduce learners to Le Corbusier through his life and work. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will develop an increased understanding of this master architect and planner’s writing and building.

Jennie Hirsh (Ph.D., Bryn Mawr College) is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at Princeton and Columbia Universities, as well as pre-doctoral fellowships from the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, the U.S. Fulbright Commission, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Wolfsonian FIU. Hirsh has authored essays on artists including Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Yinka Shonibare, and Regina Silveira, and is co-editor, with Isabelle Wallace, of Contemporary Art and Classical Myth (Ashgate 2011).

Dr. Hirsh’s coverage of six of LeCorbusier’s World Heritage Sites was fascinating. Her slides, in particular the inside views, were wonderful to see. Few lecturers on modern architecture give interiors the attention necessary to communicate a comprehensive understanding of why a building is considered iconic. A follow-up with other LC sites would be terrific!
