In this conversation, we will focus on the lives and histories of the Medici family through their grandeur homes and villas. Over a period of about three centuries, while settling their fortunes in Florence, the Medici continued maintaining strong connections north of Florence, where they originated from, and built out and restructured rural residences and villas all over Tuscany.

Set in the magnificent Tuscan countryside, the Medici Villas and Garden are expressions of their mastery of the territory and fine examples of how they shaped architecturally their rise to power. Together, we'll discuss these villas which were recognized as Unesco World Heritage sites in 2013. We'll learn about how the villas testify to the family's political and economic ambitions, represented in the new aesthetic relation with the landscape as in the innovative decorative solutions, carried out by illustrious Renaissance artists and engineers.

Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, this interactive seminar will explore a collection of Medici villas. Led by art historian and native Florentine, Alessandra Becucci.

Born and raised in Florence, Alessandra has a degree in art history from the University of Florence with a specialization in seventeenth-century painting. She obtained an MRes from the European University Institute in Florence, where she defended her Ph.D. in history, focusing on the patronage of the Tuscan nobility in Europe during the seventeenth century. She has been teaching art history and Italian for several years in various schools and institutions in Florence.
