Michelangelo Buonarroti, Renaissance master artist, architect, and sculptor, is perhaps most famous for his magnificent frescoes painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Together with art historian, Dr. Lauren Golden, we will explore the path that led Michelangelo to the creation of his monumental work. We will examine the influential figures in the Vatican involved in his commission and the works of art he would have seen before embarking on the project.

Through the lens of Michelangelo's artistic journey, we will examine the vast collections of the Vatican Museums, centuries in the making, and too extensive for complete understanding in one lifetime. We will stroll the galleries and see them as Michelangelo would have and put in historical perspective the Papal collections and their influence on the artist himself.

Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, this interactive seminar will explore how the ancient treasures held in the Papal collections inspired and influenced Michelangelo's masterpieces in Rome. Led by art history professor and longtime Rome resident, Dr. Lauren Golden.

Lauren has a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Art History with a specialization in the architecture of Raphel and Neuroarthistory and has been studying the city of Rome for over 35 years and teaching in Italy for 20 years. She is passionate for all things Roman, teaching from the Etruscans to the Eighteenth Century with a little bit of Mussolini thrown in. exciting because everyone sees differently and so she always learns from her clients and students.
