Following the Nazi occupation of France in 1940, Parisians began a long, uneasy cohabitation with their new masters. The humiliation of occupation bred uncertainty and fear, but also prompted some brave Parisians to fight back and embark on a secret, underground war. If the resistance turned ordinary people into heroes, others would become the villains of collaboration, willing to profit from the misery of their fellow citizens. For many more, life would be characterized by ‘shades of gray’ where intentions and consequences could be more difficult to judge. In considering a variety of examples, this Conversation will explore the complexities of resistance and collaboration and the questions they raise.

Led by Dr. Nigel Perrin, a published author, and history lecturer, this interactive discussion will delve into this fascinating subject. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of life in WW2 Paris.

This conversation is the first in a five-part series by Nigel Perrin. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.

Nigel has long been fascinated by the history of France during the Occupation, particularly in relation to the work of British secret services, a subject he began studying in 2003. 'Spirit of Resistance', his biography of secret agent Harry Peulev̩, was published in 2008. Having completed his MA in Modern History at the University of Kent in Paris in 2015, he has now begun a doctorate on a spatial history of Paris under Occupation.
