Join a local expert for a look at the famous fairy tale castle, from its planning through to building. A small virtual tour of the castle will also take place as we seek to immerse ourselves in the world the king created by looking closely at the art and architecture of its rooms and uncovering many of the castle’s hidden secrets.

Majestically set in the Bavarian alps Neuschwanstein castle welcomes 1.4 million people every year, its iconic white towers have been photographed and reproduced millions of times over but Neuschwanstein is far more than just an Instagram opportunity. In this seminar, we will look at the real story of the castle, get behind the scenes of its stunning façade to look at the reasons it was created and then how it was crafted.

We will begin by looking at how the romantic King Ludwig II of Bavaria conceived of Neuschwanstein, which was meant to be his refuge from the complexities of a rapidly evolving world. Seeking to escape into a realm of German myth and the music of Wagner he dreamt of creating a new world of music and mythology built of stone and steel, a unique fusion of fantasy and reality.

The discussion will also cover how Neuschwanstein was built, the planning and harnessing the very latest technology to build a castle of medieval aesthetics that was all mod cons like central heating and electric lights. No easy taskmaster Ludwig II was feverishly impatient and he drove his architects to despair with his unreasonable demand’s yet he was extraordinarily generous to the working men who physically built his dream and these on-site dramas will also be discussed as will life inside the castle with the increasingly eccentric king whose downfall is still a mystery today.

Led by an expert on Bavarian history, Tom Mills, this interactive seminar will cover the history of Neuschwanstein from its conception to creation. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of not just the castle’s history but of art, architecture, and the lives of the men who built it.

Tom Mills was born in Wolverhampton in the heart of England before studying History and Archaeology at Bangor University. Emerging with an MA he worked as an archaeologist and afterward a historic conservator for the National Trust. Moving to Munich in 2012 he began a career as a tour guide and many years later is still there.

Enjoyable and Informative

The on line tour was organized well and the presenter, Tom Mills, did an excellent job. I particularly liked having an outline of what would be covered at the beginning of the class and a brief summary at the end. I was not expecting to hear about political and social history of the area surrounding the building of the Castle and to learn so much about Ludwig the Second. That information added to a deeper appreciation of the wonders of the Castle.
I look forward to taking more on-line and in person tours with you.
