From Mardi Gras to the French Quarter Festival, from voodoo to jazz funerals, experience the rhythms and flavors of the city, its language, and its incomparable celebration of life. In-depth, insider commentary is coupled with a curated selection of photographs and video that captures the distinct sights and sounds of New Orleans.

Led by an expert on visual and material culture, ritual, and performance, Allison Levy, this interactive seminar will bring participants deep into a one-of-a-kind city characterized by its world-renowned celebrations and general joie de vivre. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the history and cultural meaning behind many of the rituals and festivals that define the city of New Orleans.

Allison Levy is Digital Scholarship Editor and Visiting Scholar in Italian Studies at Brown University. An art historian, she has published widely on early modern Italian visual and material culture. Allison has held teaching appointments at University College London, Wheaton College, and Tulane University, and she has worked for Context in Florence and New York City since 2005.
