Rajasthan is one of the most visually famous places in India. The image of a maharaja is indelibly associated with the architecture and aesthetics of the Rajput dynasty, rulers of this region for centuries. The dramatic landscape of northwest India, dotted with competing kingdoms, still draws visitors from around the world to see the area’s royal and military architecture. Join Dr. Anil Antony to explore the region and its fascinating history.

The mostly desert area that is now modern Rajasthan was from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries CE a thriving region of the Rajput dynasty’s kingdom. The architecture that survives includes structures as old as the fifth century that were continuously expanded until the eighteenth century. The Rajput dynasty was at its peak while the Mughal empire was in decline and exerted its influence as far as the modern Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and the Pakistani province of Sindh.

The Rajput kingdoms’ internal dynamics were broadly similar to the princely states of premodern Italy, with thirty major clans claiming descent from thirty-six principal figures. They all considered themselves to be descendants of the Kshatriyas, the superheroic and partially divine warrior caste of the great Indian epics.

Some hill forts were dug directly into mountains, while others were built from abundant sandstone, marble, and granite from local quarries and decorated with glass and precious stones. In this Conversation, we will consider the history of the Rajputs and their architectural accomplishments, focusing on several famous examples. We’ll look at sites used in Bollywood movies and, post-Covid, places where visitors can stay and live like a maharaja for a few days.

Led by an expert on Indian cultural history, Dr. Anil “Noro” Noronha Antony, this interactive seminar will explore the Rajput dynasty and its lasting architectural mark on the region of Rajasthan.  Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the history of the area and its magnificent palaces and fortresses.

Dr. Anil “Noro” Noronha Antony is an assistant director of the American Association for Cancer Research, the world’s oldest and largest private cancer research organization. He holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental biology and a lifelong interest in the history and culture of south India. Born in the Muslim-majority United Arab Emirates to an Anglo-Indian Catholic family and trained by a Hindu tantric in Kerala, he has direct experience of all three major Keralite religious traditions.

Sound and Slides need coordination

I am hoping to visit Rajasthan in the next few years. Dr. Anthony is a wealth of information, and the palaces he showed us were truly "majestic." As I have indicated, It was very frustrating as the visual lagged the lecture, so we really couldn't see what he was talking about until he moved on to say something else. I watched his Diwali program and this was NOT an issue. So I hope this can be fixed. I am currently signed up to see many of Dr. Antony's upcoming programs..

Interesting talk

I enjoyed the talk although I do think the speaker could have covered more buildings.
