Take the two best and most famous portrait painters from the Golden Age, and compare them; that is exactly what this seminar will do. Not a match, but a meaningful rendezvous between two masters who have never met each other, but changed the course of portraiture forever.

Frans Hals and Rembrandt van Rijn were the two superstars of the Golden Age when it came to portraiture; like true Andy Warhols of their age, they portrayed the rich and famous, art connaisseurs and businessmen alike. Although their style is sometimes reminiscent of each other, there are differences. We’ll look closely at a carefully curated selection of their masterpieces as we pick apart these iconic artists.

An expert in Dutch Golden Age painting, Sabry Amroussi, will take you past all the relevant masterpieces of the virtuoso artists; from the 'Portrait of Jan Six' to 'the Laughing Cavalier'. We’ll meet these often familiar faces and see them in a different light. Although always rooting for Rembrandt, Sabry will take a broad approach and paint a lively portrait of these 'rivals' with humor and gusto.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and also has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects, and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection on Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

I need more stars!!!!

Excellent, in-depth discussion of 2 of the most important painters of the Dutch Golden Age. I may not always agree with Sabry, but he always makes his points with an expert's knowledge and real passion. This was an especially fine seminar.

Great detail and awesome guide

I have done two of Sabry's seminars as he's incredible with the amount of information he packs into this. Tons of detail, back story, hidden meanings that you would never get seeing these pieces in person. Truly exceptional.

This is Sabry at his best!

Knowing that Sabry is an expert Rembrandt as well as a fan himself, I was looking forward to his presentation of these two superstars of the Golden Age. I was not disappointed. Sabry broke the presentation down into a logical structure and made his case for each, using his expertise and fabulous high-res images to get us inside each crack of the paintings. 90 minutes went by in a flash...I would have happily done 90 more! An excellent presentation and truly the best of all of Sabry's that I've done.
