Most people might know Rembrandt van Rijn as one of the best and most famous painters who have ever lived, and rightly so, but often forget how good and revolutionary he was as both an etcher and a draughtsman. This conversation seeks to explore the lesser-known side of Rembrandt’s talents through his impressive technical skills in the drawing and etching departments.

Already during his lifetime, his etchings fetched huge sums, as seen in the name of one of them; 'the hundred guilders print.' Apart from Durer, there is hardly an old master that explored the limits of printing, totally revolutionizing it with great inventiveness. Also as a draughtsman, Rembrandt can transport the virtuosity of his paintings to paper, making numerous observations from life, and often repeating subjects that he explored on canvas.

Led by Sabry Amroussi, an expert on Rembrandt and his school, who had been studying this subject for over 25 years, this seminar will leave participants with a profound understanding of an often neglected aspect of this amazing artist. With his vast knowledge, humor, and experience with Rembrandt, Sabry is a fitting expert to share his passion for Rembrandt, 'his best friend' with listeners.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and also has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects, and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection on Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.
